While the furthest many Lafayette students have ventured on summer break is Florida, sophomore Kevin Dick has been around the world– literally.  He has been to 21 countries on four continents, including North America, Asia, Europe and Africa.

In fact, his most recent trip was to Egypt where he visited Giza, Cairo, Luxor and Aswan.

“Luxor was actually my favorite place in all of Egypt.  It [had] really friendly people,” Dick said.

Dick’s mom works for the International Food Policy Research Institute, which entails her traveing to various countries around the world.  Because of her frequent flyer miles, her entire family can accompany her.

“She (Dick’s mom) looks at countries’ policies on how they distribute food and welfare and tries to make sure everyone has equal rights to water, land and various resources,” Dick said.

Of all the countries Dick has been, he said the one that stands above the rest is India.

“My mom was born in India, and she actually knows Tamil, which is the language that is spoken in southern [India], so she can translate for us.  She has family and friends there still, so we go around and see what the people are like,” Dick said.

“Everyday we find some family friend to eat dinner with them- sometimes in the slums, sometimes in nice houses.  It’s a lot of fun,” he added.

Dick has been to India three times.  First, when he was six months old, then in second grade, and then more recently.

Although India is his favorite country to vacation to, he said he wants to move to England when he grows up.

“I like British accents, all the people there are friendly, and I like the style of culture,” Dick said.

Have you ever been out of the country?
