Freedom of expression is very important to senior Sarah Jeffery. She likes to express herself through body art - more specifically through her four tattoos.

Jeffery’s tattoos are located on her left foot, lower back, inner right wrist and left wrist/hand.

She got her first tattoo when she was 17-years-old at Boca Body Art in Florida. The pattern is a flower and tribal wings that symbolizes freedom.

“It was going to be a lot smaller, but it looked stupid. So we kept blowing it up until it looked good,” she said.

Next, when she was 18, she got her boyfriend of two years’ name, Lance, put on her inner right wrist. This tattoo she got at Ink Doctor in St. Louis.

“Lance and I went to get tattoos at the same time. He got my name and I got his, it was our Christmas presents to each other,” Jeffrey said.

Jeffery’s third tattoo was done by Lance’s cousin who is a tattoo shop owner. The design is one she created herself which includes her mother’s name, Teresa. This tattoo was her biggest whim; Jeffery got it mostly because Lance was getting one and she decided to as well.

“We struggled with where to put it, because I couldn’t decide where it would look best. So I told him to just surprise me. He grabbed my wrist and started drawing,” Jeffery said.

And her last tattoo was also gotten on a whim, which her boyfriend got her as a gift over spring break. It is a flower tattoo on her foot, also from Ink Doctor.

“They all hurt the same, but the one on my foot was the worst because of all the nerves. It was really sensitive,” she said.

Jeffery said as of right now she doesn’t regret getting any of them, she only regrets their placement. She said the visibility of the ones on her wrists have already prevented her from getting a job and she fears that will happen again in the future.
