On Sunday, Jan. 15, junior Hannah Meuret participated in a half marathon, or 13.1 miles. The event took place in Florida and helped to raise money for Breast Cancer awareness.

lhsimage.com asked Meuret 5 Questions to get the details on her race.

Q: Did the race seem like it was more than 13.1 miles while you were running it?

A: It didn’t seem like a lot at first but then once I hit the fourth mile I realized I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.

Q: When you went to Florida, did you know you were going to be participating in a half marathon?

A: No, I originally planned on running a 5K [5000 meters, or about 3.1 miles], but it didn’t work out so I ran a half marathon instead.

Q: Who did you run the half marathon with?

A: My dad. He ran [a half marathon] before by the arch.

Q: Did you and your dad finish at the same time?

A: Yes.

Q: What was it like to cross the finish line together?

A: It felt good. It was fun that we got to stay together the whole time. It’s kind of our shared experience now.

Meuret and her dad both finished with a time of nearly exactly two hours.

Before becoming the history teacher at Lafayette, Vince DeBlasi spent time serving our country.

lhsimage.com asks DeBlasi a few questions about his experiences in his time spent in the military.

Q: What branch of the military were you in, and what was your rank?
A: “I was in the Army – Signal Intelligence branch. I had a security clearance so I can’t tell you much other than I dealt with Morse Code and I had some language skills that required me to eavesdrop on people. I loved my job.”

Q: What was the most memorable experience in the Army?
A: “The best part of my military experience was that I was able to travel the world. I lived in Germany, Japan and Italy. My favorite place was Germany; the people were really cool and I skied the Alps every winter! Plus, I took up cycling and started racing for a German club in the city of Augsburg.”

Q: How did you first become interested in joining the Army?
A: “My family has a history of military service and I couldn’t afford college. I went down to the recruiter and the Army was offering the best college deal at the time.”

Q: Would you say it influenced your decision to become a world history teacher?
A: “It totally influenced me. I traveled all over the world and I didn’t really know what these beautiful paintings, buildings and cultures were all about. So I started to go to college so I could dig deeper. The one aspect of the military that really influences my teaching is that I have been to most of the places we study every day so I can add my own insight and stories.”

Q: Would you consider going back to the military?
A: “Actually, I would love to get back into the military but with three boys and a wonderful wife – I can’t. I do miss my time spent in the Army. I got to meet so many cool people and go to exciting places and I was young enough that I could really run around and appreciate it. It was the best!”

Junior Blake Brueggemann takes baseball very seriously. Especially when his team is on the line. His Fantasy team that is. Ever year, Brueggemann creates his ultimate baseball team, picking and choosing players from different teams all to be accumulated in his roster.

lhsimage.com delves into the world of Fantasy baseball and asks Blake a few questions.

Q: How did you get into the Fantasy Baseball world?
A: “I was originally introduced to fantasy football by a friend. And when that season was over we just decided we would get the same group of guys together for baseball. I was more interested in baseball so it was naturally easier.”

Q. Why do you enjoy it?
A: “I think the reason I enjoy it is because I can still be in contact in some way with the game even though I don’t play it anymore. Also its just something to do and talk about. The best part is when you’re playing one of the people you know really well. That’s when the real trash talking begins.”

Q: What important decisions do you have to make while creating your team?
A: “The single most important part of fantasy baseball is the draft. It is basically the predictor of how your season’s going to play out. I know people that actually buy books that help them in the draft. I don’t really go that far, but I do take it somewhat seriously.”

Q: Who are you favorites this season?
A: “As far as the Cards go, I think Colby Rasmus will continue to do well and Berkmen really surprised me. He dropped like 50 pounds in the off season and he’s still like 50 something years old but he’s good.”

Q: What has been the best moment in the season for you and your team?
A: “I don’t know if the best moment has happened yet. I would say that will hopefully happen in the playoffs. Otherwise I would say beating the manager of the league I am in because he actually pays attention. You always get a few people that don’t care about it after the draft, so it’s always better to beat someone that pays attention because they care that they lost.”

For some, sports are a pastime or a hobby. For senior Michael Hunebrinker, they are a way of life. When he isn’t at school, he can most often be found at the rink.

lhsimage.com took the time to find out where his passion for hockey took root, and how far Huntebrinker plans to pursue it.

Q: How long have you been playing hockey, and how did you get started?
A: “I got started because for my third birthday I got a pair of roller blades and I tried to skate with them in the basement and I couldn’t stand up, so I threw them and said I never wanted to skate again. But my parents made me keep practicing so I started playing inline hockey when I was four and then I switched to ice [hockey] when I was five.”

Q: How often do you travel for hockey, and when does the season start and end?
A: “During the season, we normally travel three weeks out of the month. We have our tryout camp in June, and then we have summer workouts until August, then we go from August until April.”

Q: Why do you like playing hockey?
A: “I like playing hockey because it’s fun to be around the guys when you play, you spend a lot of “bro time” in the locker room with the boys, long bus trips, you listen to a lot of Sugarland. Linger by the Cranberries is a team favorite.”

Q: How often do you practice?
A: “We have practice four times a week if we don’t have games that weekend, and then we have workouts two nights, but if we have an off weekend then we practice five or six times a week.”

Q: What are your plans for next year, after graduation?
A: “It depends on the United States Hockey League Draft. It depends where I get drafted, so we’ll see. I just have to wait on that. I have a visit to Ohio State, I might play there. And, I’m going up to British Columbia to try out for a team, too, so I’ll just weigh my options.”

Senior Nico D’Antonio recently committed to the Indiana University Bloomington’s football program, having played football for all four years at Lafayette.

lhsimage.com asks D’Antonio about his thoughts on this unique experience.

Q: How were you first contacted?
A: “Coach [Boyd] Manne got a call from an Indiana coach about a different player, and he said you need to look into this kid, meaning me. The guy was able to get onto a highlight video I put on YouTube, and then he said for me to give him a call. I was able to get a hold of him that next Monday, and we set up a date for me to come and meet the coaches and see a practice.”

Q: Was this unexpected?
A: “I never really thought I would play a sport in college. A couple of people told me I had the ability so I knew I had to work hard to get there.”

Q: Do you have any ambitions for football after college?
A: “Right now I am just focused on college.”

Q: What position do you expect to play at Indiana?
A: “Long snapper, I am not big enough to play any other position.”

Q: Did you want to go to Indiana before?
A: “About a year ago I went there for an academic event, and I have always had an interest in business, and the IU School of Business is in the top ten for all the business majors for all the public schools in America. I had fallen in love with the campus when I visited my junior year.”

As the end of the school year quickly approaches, seniors have more on their mind than ever before. While some slack and let the senioritis finally take over, others are busily preparing for life beyond LHS.

lhsimage asks Senior Heather Rightler about life as a senior eagerly anticipating freedom from high school.

Q: Is senioritis affecting you yet?

A: ”I am so ready to graduate and just be out of school, but I somehow still have energy to do all my work. It is very important that I keep my A’s because I don’t want to have to take any finals.”

Q: What is the most stressful part of 4th quarter for you?

A: “Trying to balance all the last minute projects and work, preparing for AP exams and trying to keep track of all the college deadlines.”

Q: What is your favorite LHS memory and what will you miss about the school?

A: “I will definitely miss dances and seeing all my friends every day. Other than that, not much at all.”

Q: How has your senioritis impacted your outlook on life?

A: “Well, I care a lot less about what people think of me. Knowing I wont be seeing most of them after a few weeks, I dont care too much what their opinions about me are.”

Q: How are you preparing for life after high school and how will your life change after graduation?

A: “I’m trying to prepare myself to be more independent and start paying for all my own stuff. I know everything wont be as easy when I’m on my own, but I’m so excited to start my career and the rest of my life.”

While only playing lacrosse for two years, freshman Shelby Foley made the junior varsity ladies lacrosse team at Lafayette.

lhsimage.com asked her about the ups and downs of playing on a higher level.

Q: How long have you been playing lacrosse?
A: “I have been playing lacrosse since 8th grade. I started out playing for one of my dad’s friends. He started a lacrosse team and I decided that it would be fun to try it out. Ever since then I’ve loved it!”

Q: What position do you play?
A: “I usually play middle, but it depends on which position for middle I play. This year my coach has put me on as a D-wing. It’s a pretty hard position, but it’s a lot of fun. On my 8th grade team I played A-wing as a middle and also center.”

Q: What level team do you plan on?

A: “I play full time JV which is awsome! I’m so glad I have the opportunity to play with the older girls. With the freshman team, I’m allowed to play with them if I’d like to.”

Q: What do you think your chances are of making varsity next year?
A: “I think my chances of making varsity next year are pretty slim. I’d love to play at that level; it would take extremely hard work but it would be an awesome opportunity. I think my chances are pretty low because there are many returning upperclassmen and 99 percent of them will be playing varsity. The other upperclassman on JV are also very skilled.”

Q: Are there any downsides to being on JV and not the freshman team with all of your peers?

A: “I would say that the only down-side that comes with playing immediately on JV as a freshman would be not getting to make friendships with the girls on the freshman team. I would have liked to get to know them better, but as a balance I now know many upperclassmen.”

A: “I usually spend 15 or 20 minutes, but only if I have a small AP lit assignment. If I have an essay I only spend one to two hours. Other than that, I rarely do homework at home.”

Q: When do you get all of your homework done?
A: “I do have a lot of homework because I am in four AP classes, but I have easier classes earlier in the day, so I do homework then.”

Q: What do you do during your AP classes?
A: “Typically I just listen, sleep or do homework, though in my harder classes like AP Calc I take notes.”

Q: Do you have any tips for future AP slackers?
A: “Focus most of your energy on the classes that are the most tough for you. Most of your homework can be done at school, but spend some time studying at home. The most important thing is to listen in class, that way you can study even less at home.”

lhsimage.com delves into her life as a dedicated volleyball player.

Q: How many years have you been playing volleyball and has it been your only sport?
A: “I’ve been playing since 5th grade, so six years. In middle school, I played select softball and volleyball. Also dance and cheerleading. Our volleyball team name is Rockwood Thunder.”

Q: Has your team qualified for Nationals in the past?
A: “Yes, the first time was in 8th grade in Miami. Last year it was in Reno. Hopefully we will qualify for Nationals this year. That would be tight.”

Q: Where did Nationals take place last summer? What were the results?
A: “Nationals were in Reno. We didn’t place so good but at least we got there. As a team, we were proud we were there but we knew we could do better.”

Q: What steps did you and your team have to take to make Nationals?
A: “We had to pick a good team and practice every aspect to make our team better. In order to get to Nationals, we had to go to Qualifiers or place first or second at Regionals.”

Q: What are you expectations this year for you and your team? Where are Nationals this summer?
A: “As a team, we started out rough but my expectations are to make it this year and do great as a team.”
